This Father’s Day post is about my children.
I always say our oldest is an exact copy of Zac. Only 3 and a half years old and already, his meticulous attention to detail shines through. Salem has a vivid imagination, fueled by the connections he makes out of his observations and experiences. He tells stories with gusto, and leads with enthusiasm (and creative planning!). Salem is the only one of our kids who sucks his thumb, like Zac did as a kid. He loves to encourage others with smiles, hugs, and compliments—and he is continuously inviting us to share his excitement about his various passions (Thomas the train, video games, and metal music). All of this, and his great sense of humor, are a charming reflection of his father.
Then there’s Lydia. Unstoppably charming, with chocolatey eyes and an innate talent for pouting, she can win over anyone. The girl is physically fearless, climbing everything (and has several scars for souvenirs). She loves animals, babies, and other kids, and is so perceptive of the way others are feeling. Lydia herself feels things very strongly and does not (often) compromise once she’s set her mind to something. Our only daughter so far, Lydia is Zac’s kryptonite—using his own powers of persuasion against him to devastating effect.
Little Abraham is our baby, not yet a year old, but I see so much of Zac in him—often quite literally. Abe has rich, dark skin that browns right up with any amount of sunshine. His hair is dark, too—right now, darker than either of his siblings’. He has very active physical energy—always rummaging, exploring, lunging gleefully at his favorite people—but plop him on a chair in the sun and he slows down like a desert lizard. It’s like he was born for the summer. And the thing that stands out the most is how much he truly enjoys being close to the people he loves. This is one of my favorite things about Zac.
A lot of people say the best thing about having kids is seeing your spouse become a parent. Zac is a wonderful, Godly, fun-loving dad, without a doubt—but the best thing about sharing these babies with him is seeing all the things I love about him come through in their personalities.
Happy Father’s Day, babe! You absolutely deserve it for this gift you’ve given me ❤️
